Helping K-3 teachers acquire the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective reading instruction.

Why Reading First?

The Reading First - Ohio Center (RFOC) is a partnership between the Ohio Department of Education,Cleveland State UniversityJohn Carroll University and the University of Akron.

The primary goal of the center is to help K-3 teachers acquire the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective reading instruction. Our participants learn how to use data-based instructional decision-making, accurate diagnoses and powerful interventions to ensure children's progress.

The RFOC website provides a collection of resources which can be viewed from the following perspectives:

RFOC PARTICIPANTS

It's a diverse group of people who are making Reading First -Ohio Center a success.  Our community of educators- we're teachers, principals, professors of education, curriculum directors, instructional technology specialists and others - spans the education profession.  All our participants are making a difference in the lives of young readers throughout the State of Ohio.

FAMILIES

Families, caregivers, friends and teachers all want children to be successful readers.   We at the Reading First - Ohio Center understand the importance of these relationships in a child's life, and know that families can directly impact a child's reading ability

The resources in this section of our site are provided to help encourage, support, and understand the development of reading skills in young children.

HIGHER EDUCATION

With sustained help from the federal government and foundations, Ohio universities have developed considerable expertise in the areas of reading instruction and teacher preparation. If Ohio schools and districts are to have high-quality programs, they need to be able to draw on this expertise for professional development.

Reading First-Ohio is committed to forging stronger, more sustained partnerships between higher and K-12 education. Our goal is to strengthen and enhance teacher preparation in effective K-3 reading instruction, and to increase the number of pre-service teacher candidates that graduate from Ohio institutions of higher education who have a full understanding of Reading First-Ohio, scientifically based reading research, the state English language arts standards, and the Ohio assessment system.
